"Always Check Your Compass"
CHAPTER I
Small Double
In the 1930s, Hungary was buzzing with excitement over aviation, especially after László Hadházy, a Hungarian pilot, attempted an ambitious flight from Budapest to New York. However, his plane wasn’t quite up to the task. After struggling through engine issues, a barely functional compass, and several mishaps, he found himself landing in Berlin instead of New York. The whole adventure turned into a running joke in Hungarian aviation circles—though it was later celebrated as an early attempt to push the limits of Hungarian aviation. It also gave rise to the saying, "Always check your compass!"

However, aviation in Hungary takes its roots from 1902, when a weird hot air balloon, Turul, rose above Budapest to do some research. However, it took almost 20 years for a commercial flight to appear. This was due to the post-war restrictions imposed on Hungary, but somehow in 1922, a French-Romanian airline received an exclusive permit to run a flight from Paris to Constantinople. In those days, aircrafts were not capable of covering such long distances without stops. One of these stopover points was Budapest after just a 14 hours flight.

During the Soviet era a national company was established - "MALEV" who due some financial frauds was terminated (oops) in 2012, being replaced by a private company "Wizzair". You can still see some of the old fleet on your way to and from the airport.
