"The Love Bus"
CHAPTER XI
Small Double
In the 1970s an "Ikarus" bus driver Uncle János, noticed that many regular commuters were young singles. Being a romantic at heart, he began subtly matchmaking, striking up conversations and seating potential pairs next to each other.
One day, the bus broke down, stranding passengers at a scenic park. Uncle János, always prepared, pulled out a picnic basket and suggested they pass the time with snacks and chatting. Two of the stranded passengers hit it off and later invited János to their wedding, crediting the “Love Bus” for their romance.

Public transport in Budapest has always been an adventure from the start when horse-drawn trams debuted, rattling down cobblestone streets. These “equine limos” weren’t luxurious, as passengers often had to dodge manure while boarding. By 1887, Budapest swapped horses for electricity, introducing Europe’s first electrified tram line, but early passengers joked they got a free facial from all the sparks and smoke.
In 1896, the city unveiled the Millennium Underground Railway, the oldest metro line in continental Europe, to celebrate Hungary’s 1,000th birthday. Locals nicknamed it “the subway for gentlemen,” though it wasn’t long before workers and mischievous kids claimed it too.

After World War I, transport became more crowded but no less entertaining. By the 1930s, ticket inspectors had a reputation for their strictness, but passengers loved to swap stories about outsmarting them, from fake tickets to elaborate disguises.

Under communism, Budapest’s transport system expanded, with the Soviet-designed "Ikarus" buses becoming a city icon. These rattling buses had a charm of their own, despite freezing winters and steamy summers that turned them into mobile saunas.
