Pom Pom Tales
CHAPTER XIX
Classic double
Pom Pom meséi (Pom Pom Tales) is a Hungarian animated series created by Dániel Tamkó-Sipos and directed by Attila Dargay, first released in 1978. It quickly became one of the most iconic children’s animations in Hungary, known for treating imagination as something intelligent and slightly philosophical, with humour built on gentle absurdity and exaggeration, and for reflecting the creative storytelling style of the late socialist period, where limited technical means led to strong writing, character-driven worlds, and a distinctive narrative voice.

The series is built around short, self-contained episodes in which the character Pom Pom tells imaginative stories to a little girl, often introducing eccentric, exaggerated figures who reflect everyday human traits in a playful, metaphorical way. The animation is intentionally minimalistic, but expressive — relying more on character, rhythm, and narration than visual complexity.

Over time, Pom Pom Tales became more than a children’s programme. It stayed in Hungary’s shared memory, remembered for its warmth, voice, and quiet originality.
